Position Description

 

Position Title:              Athletic Coach (Head) - Activities

Department:               Activities

Reports To:                 Activities Director, Principal

 

SUMMARY:

Coaches student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition, models sportsmanship and effective life skills and promotes the development of appreciation and enjoyment of the sport.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to

improve coaching performance.

  • Instruct assistant coaches in techniques necessary to meet established program philosophy and objectives.
  • Participate in the hiring of assistant coaches directly and indirectly through input at other levels.
  • Assist in the scheduling of the activity or sport.
  • Maintain proper communication with other coaches to ensure a 7-12 philosophy is consistently being implemented at all levels.
  • Stay abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Comply with local, state and federal legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  • Participates in the budget process with the athletic director.
  • Is accountable for all equipment, uniforms issuance and collection, as well as off-season storage of the aforementioned items.
  • Maintains good public relations with the media, Booster Club, and volunteers.
  • Develops procedures to keep parents and players informed.
  • Establishes clear policies with parents and players to address issues and/or concerns.
  • Frequently update the athletic director during the season about any issues, concerns, highlights, or events.
  • Constantly strives to better the program and examines various aspects of the program to continually improve.
  • Provides detailed practice plans to the regularly scheduled practice sessions. Supervises all practices, games, and team trips.
  • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the assigned sport is conducted at all times that the students and coaches are present.
  • Attends special meetings and those requested by the league and IHSAA.
  • Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretation, meeting procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects pertaining to the sport.
  • Maintains accurate documents for: inventory, statistics, records, and results of the team and program.
  • Adheres to policies and rules developed by the school, league, and IHSAA.
  • Recommends equipment, uniform, and supply needs. Maintains equipment issued to the program.
  • Maintains the necessary paperwork: emergency forms, attendance forms, insurance, etc. Submits and maintains all paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Communicates effectively with the athletic trainer and team physician.
  • Supervises/assists in off-season practices and conditioning, if applicable.
  • Organizes, plans, and helps manages the season end awards ceremony.
  • Presents evidence that they have fulfilled the responsibilities detailed in this job description.
  • Upholds district policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, exhibits a professional attitude, and models appropriate behavior.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned by the Activities Director.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students during all school-related activities and teacher associates and volunteers as appropriate.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

SKILLS are required to model and demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop basic skills or physical condition. Responsible for providing training rules and expectations and seeing that rules are taught to each participant. Responsible for holding players out of practice and games until they have fulfilled the IHSAA and Indianola Community School District requirements for physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required of sport rules and strategies. Must know and be able to apply the developmental stages of each point of the game and the needs and ability levels of the team and players. Knowledge is also required to establish fundamental philosophy for activity or sport and analyze and evaluate sport effectiveness.

 

ABILITY is required to develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance individual and team skill development that makes up the game. Ability is also required to develop a supervision plan to ensure the safety and welfare of students at all times and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and regulations. Ability to communicate in a professional manner with players, parents, supervisors, peers and spectators is required at all times.

Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; and working flexible hours.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include: teaching student athletes the techniques and strategies of the respective sport; establishing high academic and behavioral expectations that help promote the social, emotional, physical and academic growth of student athletes; modeling high moral character and discipline; establishing clear goals and direction for the team, student athletes and coaches.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, stretching, standing and/or walking. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 20% walking, and 75% standing; occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is required.

 

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree is desired.

Current coaching authorization through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
