Position Description

 

Position Title:              Musical Director - Activities

Department:               Activities

Reports To:                 Activities Director, Principal

 

SUMMARY:

Responsible for overseeing the preparation, direction, and performance of the school's annual musical production(s).  Collaborating with students, staff, and the community to create a high-quality experience.  The Musical Director will direct rehearsals, teaching music and vocal techniques, and manage all aspects of the production, ensuring that students are provided with an enriching and educational experience in the performing arts. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Artistic Direction:

    • Select a suitable musical that aligns with the school's resources, talent, and educational goals.
    • Develop a creative vision for the production, including staging, blocking, and overall tone.
  • Casting and Rehearsals:

    • Organize auditions and cast students in roles that match their abilities and growth potential.
    • Create and maintain a rehearsal schedule that accommodates students’ academic and extracurricular commitments.
    • Lead rehearsals, providing constructive feedback and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Collaboration:

    • Work closely with the music director, choreographer, and technical staff to ensure cohesive production elements (e.g., music, dance, set design, lighting, costumes).
    • Communicate regularly with school administration, parents, and community members to coordinate resources and support.
  • Production Management:

    • Oversee all aspects of the production, including budget management, licensing, and securing performance rights.
    • Ensure a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
  • Student Development:

    • Provide mentorship to students, encouraging artistic growth and confidence.
    • Promote teamwork, discipline, and a strong work ethic.
  • Community Engagement:

    • Promote the production to the school and local community to maximize attendance and participation.
    • Foster relationships with volunteers, local businesses, and sponsors for additional support.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students during all school-related activities and teacher associates and volunteers as appropriate.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Music, Education, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience directing or assisting in musical theater productions, preferably at the high school level.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
  • Knowledge of theater production, including staging, lighting, and sound

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience in vocal coaching, choreography, or set design.
  • Familiarity with licensing requirements and budget management.
  • Patience, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with high school students.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school and activities program.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Evening and weekend commitments during rehearsal and performance periods.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment as necessary for set and stage preparation.
